Incredibly funny angle on an important topic. Way back in the early days of the attraction community, a huge wave of guys joined up precisely because of the last recession... the dot com bomb recession. A lot of the now-legendary names started during dot com bomb.

Treat a recession like a great opportunity - more time right now to focus on social skills instead of the old "bury the worries in extra work".

Avoid AMT! Have more low key dates! Flirting is free.

@Robert One
While I am no where even close to being famous or all that good. I do know that I did join the community after losing my engineering position in 2001. I wasn't part of Silicon Valley but we got hit hard on Silicon Alley. Before getting involved with the community I got a job in a night club and started to learn from some of the naturals and players at the club. They let me pull their coat tails. It was a good start. In fact it is b/c of one of these players that I got into the community. When the "Game" came out I thought it was the biggest bs I had ever heard of. Previously I had a library of how to get laid/a girlfriend/a date books and they were pretty much all bs. It wasn't until one of the players at the club borrowed the book and put his stamp of approval on the book. Then it became my mission to get and read that book...

@everyone
Like I said I am not all that good but if you want a little advice get a job in the night life. That is what I am doing right now. You will be able to meet a lot of women, practice your craft and even learn from naturals. Many places will pay you off the books (so you can still collect unemployment) and if you are lucky maybe make some money on the side (slipping people through the back door, working the line etc). Remember this is a job that doesn't really count so you don't have to stress over getting fired or getting caught doing something "unethical." Just don't get arrested, killed or beat up and you'll be fine. Furthermore if you make the right connections you will have connections when the economy picks up.

Now I have a little question and I guess I will be the jerk to ask it. I have started to notice w/ a lot of people that I know that quite a few people are living with their families nowadays (including myself). For a lot of people this is related to the economy: lost their home, lost their job, no savings. Now anyone have any advice on dealing w/ that little obstacle other than say joining the Armed Forces (strange enough I hear that they are still hiring)?

i'm sure glad i had the chance to listen to this, sure made me feel better. i've been laid off already from one job and layoffs have started at my new one, however; i'm glad i've found these groups and teachers like lance and others. i'm gonna take this recession positively and perhaps a much needed break not only for myself, but maybe all of us. when the economy was booming i could really notice bad attitudes and feel intensely negative vibes everywhere, which would rub off on me.

time for a cool down and enjoy or take up activities i've always thought about, but never got around to accomplishing.

thanks,
berd

I really enjoyed this presentation. However I want to say that unlike your story...I find myself working 90 hours a week just to hang onto my job. Wheras Before I worked 40 hours, got by at work, and was able to work as a bouncer and have a great social life. For the past year that's evaporated

PS @SnakeEyez is on point bouncing totally did more for me than all the PUA material/coaching in the world

@Ron
Thanks Ron. Just wanted to make a point that I am not just talking about bouncing (though it is a hell of a position in a club). I mean any job just about. Bartender, coat check, etc. It is kind of embarrassing to admit but I started out working in clubs working coat check. To tell you the truth it was a pretty beta job to start out with. Back then I was really beta: despite being over 240 lbs and having a black belt in karate I was practically terrified of women. I almost never approached women. Working coat check I started to open all of the single women at the end of the night (we are talking about at least a couple of hundred approaches each night). Furthermore I had immediate feedback: the girls that I worked with used to dis me until I got good with a little game, then they began to swoon.

I was also forced to become more alpha: I worked at a really grimy Hip Hop club in NY. Back then MC's from NYC would put the name of the club in their songs. At first I was intimidated by the crowd but later on I found out their bark was worse than their bite. I found out that I was a lot more dangerous than them. It was kind of my schooling for security (bouncing).

Seriously though if you can get a job doing bartending. These are the money makers of the club. If you get the right spot you can make a lot of money. Also if you are a little dishonest this is where you can rob the place blind (not saying you should do that just that you can).

If you have fooled around w/ records and can get your hands on the right equipment you might want to try your hand at dj'ing also. This one is more or a lottery game though (where some dj's make a lot of money while most make little). If you can get a gig in a lounge or bar though it is a great way to get out and meet people w/ a real value adding job. Besides you might actually make a real career at it.

Very good advice.

English is not my first language, but I noticed
some little mistakes:
Stimulus 1: People are have MORE TIME.
Must say, People are having MORE TIME.
... there may be little hope of advancing
there career.
Must say, ...there may be little hope of
advancing their career.
And last: ...impacted or more worried then you.
Must say: ... impacted or more worried than you.

You see correcting this is another symptom of having more free time ;-)

This reminds me of one of the underlying principles of "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill:

Every adversity, failure, or setback in life also carries with it the seed of an equal or greater success.

And the first sentence of the book is "Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve."

Lances' info echoes these morsels of wisdom loud and clear!

Thanks Lance! I needed this - I'm working part-time now and need this, re-evaluating my next steps...

Or just "evaluating" it because I just assumed life would go on as usual.
